India plans 11 new land ports

The announcement was made
on June 9 by Home Minister Amit Shah during the launch of the Land Ports
Authority Management System (LPMS), a centralized digital platform designed to
streamline operations across India’s land ports.
Currently, India operates
15 functional land ports. With the new additions, the country aims to
significantly expand capacity for cargo movement, passenger processing, and
cross-border vehicle management.
The newly introduced LPMS
system will integrate multiple agencies into a single digital network, enabling
real-time coordination and reducing manual paperwork. Officials said the system
is expected to eliminate nearly 90 percent of documentation requirements at
border points.
The platform will also
introduce electronic clearance tools and automated gate technologies, including
number plate recognition systems, aimed at reducing congestion and speeding up
processing times. Truck waiting times are expected to fall by up to 60 percent,
while gate processing could improve by more than 20 percent.
Amit Shah said, trade
through India’s land ports has increased sharply over the past decade, rising
from around INR 5,000 crore in 2014 to approximately INR 83,000 crore today.
He added that the
government is developing “smart border” infrastructure, positioning land ports
as both trade facilitators and security checkpoints. The initiative is also
intended to improve border-area development and reduce illegal cross-border
activity.
The planned expansion and
digital upgrades are part of India’s broader strategy to modernize border
logistics and strengthen regional connectivity.
