Pakistan High Commission hosts chess tournament to strengthen people-to-people ties with Bangladesh


Dhaka: The Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka on June 18 organized the third edition of the Mian Sultan Khan Chess Tournament, bringing together more than 200 participants in an initiative aimed at fostering people-to-people connections between Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The tournament, held in collaboration with the Bangladesh Chess Federation, was named after Mian Sultan Khan, the legendary Pakistani chess player who won the British Chess Championship three times, read a press release from the embassy.
Advisor to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Dr. Mahdi Amin attended the event as the chief guest. Participants included diplomats, professionals, national chess players, students, and chess enthusiasts, reflecting the growing popularity of chess in Bangladesh.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Amin said sports such as cricket and chess serve as important bridges between the peoples of Bangladesh and Pakistan. He appreciated the efforts of the Pakistan High Commission and the Bangladesh Chess Federation in organizing the tournament and expressed hope that such cooperation would continue in the future.
Pakistan High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Haider said the tournament provided a valuable platform to strengthen people-to-people contacts and promote friendship and mutual understanding between the two countries. He noted that collaborative and competitive events help build stronger bonds and create opportunities for greater engagement between the peoples of Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The High Commissioner thanked the Government of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Chess Federation for their support in organizing the event. He also expressed gratitude to Dr. Mahdi Amin, diplomats, chess masters, federation officials, media representatives, and participants for contributing to the success of the tournament.
At the end of the event, Dr. Amin and High Commissioner Haider distributed certificates, medals, trophies, and prize money among the winners and top performers.
